Customer Reviews:

Best Value Purifier5
In this review, I will first summarize the major points and focus the details afterward. This way you can stop reading when you get the level of details you need. The definitions of “HEPA” and “CADR” are placed at the end of this review. Please vote for this review if you like it :) I appreciate it.

**Kimmer (another reviewer) has kindly uploaded a wonderful youtube video to demonstrate the noise level, title: “Honeywell Enviracare 50250 air purifier”. Since your computer speaker will affect the demonstrated noise level, make sure you gauge the noise to Kimmer’s voice.**

Pros: Powerful, inexpensive, permanent HEPA filter, easy to maintain, 360 degree air intake and output, portable, accessible replacement parts, good support from Kaz, a 5 year limited warranty.
Cons: Noisy, high power consumption, not stylish.

Previously I owned the Honeywell HFD-130 Germicidal Tower HEPA Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter, but due to its ozone emission and my respiratory problem, I returned it back to HomeDepot. I got fully refunded and bought this Honeywell 50250N on the same day and loved it. I have a mild allergy. I sneeze and experience itchy eyes when I am outdoor, but stop when I am at home (where my purifier is). I recommend two important points when shopping for a purifier: (1) always examines the CADR number. It is a decent performance indicator, (2) always buys an air purifier adequate for your need. A 100 sq ft purifier will not work for a 1000 sq ft living space.

Honeywell 50250N is a true HEPA filter purifier with a 250 CADR, which translates into a recommended 375 square feet usage space. Currently, this purifier is being sold at ~$160. It has been quoted as the only purifier <$200 that can clean air effectively by Consumer Reports, Consumer Search, Air-purifier America. For most HEPA purifiers, the filter replacement is the highest up-keeping cost and is ~$100 annually. 50250N has a permanent Lifetime HEPA filter which can save a lot of money. The purifier has an activated carbon prefilter which protects the HEPA filter and absorbs traces level of volatile molecules, sources for odors. The prefilter is recommended to be replaced every 3 months for optimal odor removal. If odor removal is not needed, then the prefilter does not need to be replaced regularly. This purifier has a 360 degree air intake and air exhaust, making it effective at circulating air. The unit weighs in 20.1 pounds and all parts are large and sturdy. Replacement parts are relatively easy to find. I have seen them at my local Target, Home Depot, Walmart and Sears from time to time.

The unit vibrates slightly at its lowest fan speed and air “pulses” out of the unit. Kaz consumer service was very helpful in explaining this. The small vibration is due to slow air buildup across HEPA filter. The vibration is considered as a normal feature and does not affect its performance. I did my own test to prove this, and you can too: take your HEPA filter out of the unit and run it, and the purifier should stop wobbling. This proves the vibration is due to air buildup, not an imbalance fan.

The unit has two major shortcomings. It is noisy at the highest fan speed, and noticeable at the lowest fan speed. For those who wonder if you can tolerate the noise, it is not a machine cranking noise. It is a high air flow sound. If you have any doubt, you can always buy this unit from a respected local store, so that you can return it easily. The purifier also has a high power consumption of 170/120/50 watts at the three fan speeds. This purifier is not stylish.

Is Honeywell 50250N the best purifier? Absolutely not! IQ Air purifiers are considered the very best, but their cheapest model is $700 and many are above $1000. Honeywell 50250N is one of the most effective purifiers in its prize range: <$200. In comparison, we will look at Whirlpool AP450 which is rated as number 1 by Consumer Reports, and Ionic Breeze Quadra which has a very large market. Whirlpool AP450 has a ~330 CADR rating and costs $250. This yields a nice ratio of 1.3 CADR/$, which means you get 1.3 CADR capability for every dollar spent. Honeywell 50250N has an even better ratio of 1.6 CADR/$. The two purifiers are also competitive in term of the operation cost. AP450 is energy star certified using only 105 W, whereas 50250N has a permanent HEPA filter. In the case both purifiers run at full speed continuously (24/7) and the electricity cost is $0.1 per kWh (average in USA), the annual electricity costs will be $92 and $150 for AP450 and 50250N, respectively. The AP450 saves an annual $60 in electricity, but costs an annual $90 for HEPA filter replacement. Of course, AP450 is more powerful, so when considering the cleaning power per annual cost, they are almost the same. On the other hand, Ionic Breeze is a disappointment. It has an estimated 10-20 CADR and it costs over $300 — a ridiculous 0.03-0.07 CADR/$ ratio. It was the worst purifier tested independently by Consumer Reports and Air-Purifier-America. Moreover, ionic breeze produces a high level of ozone, which Consumer Reports has issued health warnings. You can easily find the related news on the web.

(Honeywell 50250N has the Lifetime HEPA filter, but Honeywell 50250 does not. I ordered my second Honeywell from BeachCamera through Amazon, but the one arrived is the 50250 version. I called and BeachCamera admitted it does not have 50250N. I finally got my refund, but it was a hassle.)

A spotlight review here claims Sharp Plasmacluster FP-N60CX is a better purifier. I disagree. FP-N60CX has a 210 CADR and is sold at ~$350 – less powerful and more expansive. The review justifies this expense by stating that the FP-N60CX needs one carbon filter replacement in 5 years and consequently saves $200 in 5 years. This is a math error. The carbon filter replacement for Honeywell 50250N costs $200 in 5 year, but FP-N60CX also needs replacement at the end of 5 years at $80. This is a $120 difference in 5 years. The 5 years replacement is also the best case scenario, as it may need to be replaced as early as in 2 years which results in no cost advantage. According to its operation manual (available online), the FP-N60CX carbon filter needs to be cleaned every 2 months using a 6-steps cleaning process: (1) vacuum clean (2) soak in detergent mixture for 30 minute (3) scrub with a toothbrush (4) rinse with clean water (5) remove excess water with a big towel for 1-2 days (6) hang up and air dry for another 1-2 days. In one year, this may result up to a month-worth downtime. Let’s summarize this: $120 saving for cleaning the carbon filter 30 times in 5 years. You save $4 for each cleaning. Since each cleaning can take an hour, this equates $4 per hour of labor. You cannot even pay an illegal immigrant to do this! I also want to reiterate that Honeywell 50250N has a permanent HEPA filter, which can be regenerated by vacuum cleaning. It takes 3 minutes to do and need to be done twice a year. Considering the typical HEPA replacement costs $100 annually, each filter cleaning saves $50. That is $50 for 3 minutes of your time, or $1000 for an hour. This is a real saving. The “plasmacluster” feature is somewhat of a gimmick. Major hospitals, national, pharmaceutical and computer research labs use HEPA for air purification.

One last point about vacuum cleaning the Lifetime HEPA filter: a HEPA grade cleaner is recommended to regenerate the HEPA filter. Otherwise, the particles on the Lifetime HEPA will be dispersed back into the air during vacuuming. If you are suffering from a serious allergy or asthma, then you should consider owning a HEPA vacuum cleaner to begin with. Alternatively, you can vacuum the filter outside of your home so the fine particles are dispersed outside, such as your patio. Yes, and if you are really funny, you can secretly do this at your ex-girlfriend’s room. I am kidding!

Definitions:

HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) is a filter grade strictly defined by US Department of Energy, in which the filter can remove >99.97% of airborne particles that is 0.3 micrometer. The removal success rate is usually equal or higher for larger particles and for slightly smaller particles (down to ~0.01 micro), but performance drops drastically for much smaller particles. HEPA can effectively trap pollens, fine dust and smoke particles — the major causes of allergy. “HEPA-type” and “HEPA-like” purifiers fall short of this requirement, and there is no strict guideline for their exact definitions. Historically, HEPA was a top-secret technology developed to filter radioactive aerosol, part of the Manhattan Project. HEPA is not designed to remove odors and VOC (volatile organic chemicals), since they are much smaller than the effective range of a HEPA filter.

CADR (clean air delivery rate) is certified by the AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers). CADR is expressed in units of cubic feet volume per minute. The suggested floor space is usually calculated based on a 8 foot ceiling and a 5 air change setting. For example, Honeywell 50250N produces 250 cubic feet of clean air per minute or 15000 cu ft per hour. Divides 15000 cu ft by a 8 ft ceiling and by a 5 air change equates to a recommended floor space of 375 sq ft. A shortcut is to multiple the CADR number by 1.5: e.g. 250 CADR X 1.5 = 375 sq ft. Although the recommended floor space value is easier to relate to, there is no legal guideline for the calculation. Neoair’s most powerful purifier, Neoair Plus, has a suggested 600 sq ft floor space, much larger than that of Honeywell 50250N. In reality, Neoair Plus has a CADR <200, meaning it is a less powerful purifier. It turns out Neoair uses a 2.5 air change per hour for the floor space calculation. Another company, Alen, uses a 2 air change per hour for their calculations. Consequently, it is more reliable to compare air purifiers based on their CADR values.

I recommend this air cleaner4
I have suffered from allergies all of my life, but especially the last few years, they have gotten progressively worse. Last year, I lived in an apartment over two chain smokers and was constantly congested. I started researching air purifiers because my medications weren’t helping enough on their own. I ended up deciding on this unit for my living room/dining area, a Hamilton Beach 04163 for my bedroom, and another Hamilton Beach 04163 to go on the other side of my living room as well since the living room/dining area/kitchen was all together and not separated by doors and was too large an area for only one cleaner to handle efficiently. I have been very satisfied with this unit. I got it in December 2004 and it has not given me any problems. I have had to change the pre-filters a few times (you usually have to change them every three months or so) but have not yet had to change the HEPA filter. I like the way this system has what it calls Intellicheck which lets you know when it is time for the filters to be changed, as well as the way that it has the 360 degree technology. The unit looks kind of like a barrel so that the clean air flows out of the top all around it. I don’t notice a cleaner air smell like I have heard people talk about, but I can definitely tell a difference in my allergy symptoms when I am running my air cleaners or not. And when I put my Hamilton Beach air cleaner in the living room which has an auto setting that detects the air quality, it had the air rated as being good from the beginning, which I believe is due to the Honeywell 50250 which had been running 24/7 a few days prior to that since the Hamilton Beach air cleaner in my room had the air quality as poor when I turned it on the auto setting. I still have to take my allergy medications that I was prescribed, but there is a definite difference between when I just take the medication and when I take the medication and use the air cleaners.
I hope this review helps. I also like the fact that it has a carrying handle at the top, and I don’t find it very noisy. It has a white noise to it, but I have not experienced any problems not hearing the television or not being able to nap in the living room while it is on.
The replacement pre-filters are easy to find for this unit. The HEPA filter seems a little harder to find in retail stores, but it does not have to be replaced as often so it is not too bad.

Great for cigarette smoke, pollen, pet hair, pollen you name it.5
Let me start off by saying that I suffer from being allergic to cigarette smoke and my husband and I live in an enclosed apartment complex. This is made worse by the fact that the front door doesn’t seal up against the frame and smoke from the hallway leaks into our apartment with other odors and smells. Now let me add that that my husband suffers from severe allergy’s and takes medicine daily for his condition. Did I mention that we have two cats and a pug. Life was miserable in our 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment, till this little puppy showed up. It’s just like the picture describes it, like a barrel, the nice feature on it is the Intellicheck, this little feature tells you when to change the filters and it’s quite easy the pre filters just lay on the hepa filter and are held in place by two pieces of Velcro. They do need to be changed about ever two months though, this may be more then normal because of our pets. But since we got the first one for the living room we added one more to the bedroom. Now you walk down our hallway gagging on the scent and odors but as soon as you open our door you are greeted by the clean smelling air and the sound of the filter cleaning it. Okay it is a little loud but don’t let that discourage you. Wait till you get it home and turn it on full blast. It is a little noisy but when you go up to it, you can feel it sucking in the air from all around the unit. Then the freshly cleaned air gets pushed up through the top of the unit in a circle around the unit. It really does clean the square footage it claims to. Now I no longer complain about the smoke in our apartment and my husband also enjoys less sinus and nasal pressure. We did our homework on this one and read all about the Honeywell 50250. Before we decided to buy ours and were glad that we did.

Amazon.com Product Description

Honeywell’s glass-fiber HEPA material also helps remove airborne particles, viruses and bacteria without the use of chemicals or other treatments.

Easy to clean, the permanent HEPA filter helps you save money over the long run and can be vacuumed out about twice a year for cleaning. Honeywell’s SurroundSeal HEPA filter technology helps assure that virtually all of the air drawn into the air cleaner passes through the HEPA filter. Other features include 360-degree airflow, 3 speeds, a carbon pre-filter (model 38002) and an Intelli-check electronic filter change indicator. This unit measures 18 by 18 by 19 inches and is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

Clean air delivery rate (CADR):

  • 250 Pollen
  • 250 Dust
  • 250 Smoke

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) indicates the volume of filtered air delivered by an air cleaner. Created as a standard to compare the effectiveness of air purifiers. The number rates the volume of air that is filtered by the unit when it is cleaning each of the contaminants from the indoor air.

Customer Reviews:

Promax cust. svs = AWFUL1
I ordered my filters and they were shipped from Promax. After doing more research in my area I found the filters about half the price at my local Target store. I posted a review on Amazon stating that I was upset that I had paid more from Amazon/Promax and that even tho I would continue to buy from Amazon, I would not order from Promax again. I received my order and posted my review. I then received 3 phone calls and two e-mails from Promax wanting to know what they could do to resolve my opinion — David actually told me they “lived and died” by their reviews and asked me to please take down my negative review and they would do whatever they could to make me happy. I was out of town, however, I took my review down on 4/24 and called the company back today, 4/27, to tell them I had taken the review down. Promax rep David, on speaker phone, ask me what price I had bought the same item from from Target, would he be able to go online and verify the price, that he would not refund my shipping, he actually said I knew how much I was paying for the item when I hit “send” on my order, and there was no way they would refund my shipping–I should know that I had to pay shipping when I buy something. Needless to say, I am now extremely unhappy with this whole Promax experience. When they wanted me to take down my review they were absolutely wonderful; after I took down my review I was the idiot. I told them not to worry about any type of refund, to expect my negative review back online.

I would hope anyone out there would run as fast as they could from this company. In this day and age customer service is a must for any business. This company is AWFUL. As I stated before — I will continue to buy from Amazon, but if what I need is only available from Promax–I will do without.

Reuse old ones3
I love my Swiffer vacuum and have no complaint with the filters. But before you throw out a dirty one and buy a new one, try cleaning the old one with a toothbrush and some warm water. Let it dry and use it again–works fine.

Get little machine4
A co-worker recommended this and I must say it is a “great” little machine. I use it every week. I am happy I bought it; saves alot of time. The only con I have it needs to be recharged alot; otherwise, “Ladies, go out and buy this thing!” Cleaning floors has never been so easy.

Great product5
This is a great product. a friend told me about it. i finally decided to get one. i had bleeding gums. in two weeks of regular use, bleeding has stopped and i can see that my teeth is getting whiter and and my gums are great. just be careful when using the water jet side. you must turn it on with the flossing part in your mouth, or it will spray all over the place :)

Great step to complete oral health5
I have used many different oral irrigators and a couple of electric toothbrushes. I wasn’t to particular at this point. Then my boyfriend was told he had to have “scaling and planing” to correct his gum disease and we both freaked. We knew that we had to improve our program. We did the research. After reviewing and reading and asking around, we come up with the Oral B 8900. The battery operated brush seems very much like the Sonicare unit in its effectiveness. The selling point of this particular unit is the water jet. It is awesome and I recommend it to anyone. The settings of pressure are from 1 to 5…I have always maxed out oral irrigators in the past and never found much to get excited about. With this unit I have yet to go over a 3 and may in time work up to a 4 or 5 level, but only with consultation with my hygenist. The unit also come with a tongue cleaner that is attached to the battery unit. Much easier to use that manual cleaners. All in all, my boyfriend just spent over 4K and some VERY unpleasant days in periodontal agony. I am sure this little unit will keep me out of the surgeons chair and my boyfriend wants to be sure never to end up with gum disease again. “an once of prevention……”

Best toothbrush I’ve ever used.5
I’d been using a fancy Sonicare toothbrush for about a year when my dentist told me I had gum disease. I had to go through an unpleasant scaling procedure to do a deep gum cleaning. Afterwards, we talked about my brushing habits. I told him I didn’t know what I was doing wrong, since I flosh, use listerine, and use an electronic toothbrush twice a day. He asked me if it was a sonic toothbrush. When I said yes, he told me to get rid of it and to buy an oral-b mechanical toothbrush. He said that sonic toothbrushes just don’t get the job done. I was hesitant to do so, and continued using my Sonicare for another 6 months. A week before my next checkup, I noticed some significant plaque buildup on my teeth. I felt really frustrated as I had taken great care to brush thoroughly since my last dentist visit.

I finally decided to buy this toothbrush set. The difference was immediate. The general clean feeling after brushing with the oral-b brush made a huge difference. Within a couple of days, I started noticing a lot of the plaque built up was being brushed away. The OxyJet irrigator is nice, as well, and can extract some food particles from underneath the gumline. My dentist was very happy that I had finally switched toothbrushes. I had one cavity, and I’m sure that my next visit will be a lot more successful.

No matter how thoroughly you brush, if you’re using the wrong tool, you could be wasting your time. I learned this the hard way, and I’m really glad I switched. My teeth feel cleaner than ever since I’ve switched, and I’ll never go back.

Customer Reviews:

Functional, but limited life3
This unit lasted about one winter. Too much heat was generated at the point where the male power plug (from the space heater) attached to the timer’s female plug. Reportedly, excess heat can be generated if the plug is not inserted fully. But even when the plug is inserted fully and flush with the female plug, the male plug can work its way out gradually. In this case, the plastic case melts slowly and the unit stopped working — which is better than having a fire. Separatelly, I find the pins to be very inconvenient and easily misplaced. Intermec has a superior model which had sliding tabs instead. [Intermatic TN811C Programmable Lamp and Appliance Timer.] That said, for the cheaper price, I’ll be buying another unit.

short life2
I own 2; one quit after a month, the other continues to work after 1+ years. At least these timers are quiet, even when they work ;-)

good timer5
I purchased 3 of these great timers, two to manage summer home cooling and the other for general household use.

They woek well!

Great designs4
I am not wild about the side closure system on the Pull-Ups and actually prefer the Pampers Easy-Ups since they don’t come undone so easily – my daughter thinks it’s fun to rip her Pull-Up off (repeatedly) as we get her ready for bed. But, she loves the designs of both the girl and boy products and is willing to wear these (Pampers have Dora or Diego, which for some reason she does not like).

These do work well throughout the night, but the price is higher than the Pampers and sometimes the sides scratch my daughter’s legs if we don’t get it repositioned just right. They are hard to find in my local stores, so I am glad Amazon delivers these.

pull ups5
We have been using these for about a yr. In the beginning, the side openings were a huge help when the accidental poopy pull up occurred. Now, we just use them for nitetime as a “just in case.” During the training days though, we NEVER had a leak in either these or the daytime ones. This brand fits our skinny minny the best.

Love these!5
We use these for my 3 year old daughter at night and they are a lifesaver! (Should I say sheet saver?)

Customer Reviews:

among the best pop-up awnings4
I’m a long-time camper, I’ve camped in everything from snow to 115F deserts with no plant life at all, in sun, wind, rain, etc.

The smaller E-Z Ups can be handled fairly well by one person, but even they go much faster with 2. The bigger ones really do need two people to handle.

The big question is: will it actually provide you with shelter? Yes, it will. E-Z Ups actually work a fair bit better than many other brands I’ve seen. In moderate to high wind you will need to tie them down to something substantial – trees, rocks, etc. Unlike other brands, these seem robust enough – I’ve seen several other brands collapse, and their metal poles and plastic parts bend and brake. E-Z Ups seem to hold up much better. I would suggest replacing the “tent stakes” supplied with the product with something much more robust.

If you’re off camping or outdoors, and there’s a chance of rain, you’ll probably want one of these over your picnic table, they work great.

E_Z Up is mostly true4
I have seen a lot of “E-Z Up style” tents. This one is one of the better built jobs and for the most part easy to raise. The trick is for the last foot of raising the scissor blocks the legs should be pulled outward at the same time. I would recommend this product for an inexpensive but sufficient cover.

Well worth the cost4
We were surprised at the quality for the price. Ours is used along the Lake Erie shoreline where the winds can be brutal and it has been fine. You can spend alot more for the commercial grade, but for occasional use you can’t go wrong.

I works well5
I took them only in few days and I am just take half of the pills even less than that of the direction’s amount. It still works very well for me, my nail got repaired and grew well. I think it also works for my skin and hair. Good product!

Evening Primrose Oil5
This product is very helpful with hot flashes, night sweats & steadying your mood. I can’t live without it!

100 softgels or 200?3
I wonder if that is 2 packs or 100 softgels EACH = 200 softgels.

OR is it 100 softgels in 2 packs of 50 each = 100 softgels total?

The bottle in the picture says 100 – Is that 100 in that bottle?

So is that 2 bottles with 50 each (100 total), or 100 each (200 total)?

Confused.

I did get Mason Evening Primrose Oil special ordered from Walgreens for $7.50 for 60 softgels or $15.00 for 120 sofgels of 500 mg each.

That’s cheaper than $17.25 for 100 softgels of 500 mg each – on Amazon.

Unless it’s $17.25 for 200 softgels of 500 mg each on Amazon. Not sure.

Customer Reviews:

This mixer will change the way you cook5
Unlike many of the reviewers, I’ve only had this mixer for about a year, and it’s this specific model, the 250W 4.5 quart mixer (the bottom of the Kitchenaid line). It was a real splurge at the time we purchased it, but it has turned out to be well worth it.

Before the Kitchenaid, I didn’t do much baking. I tend towards more “manly” cooking techniques: the hotter the fire, the spicier the recipe, the better as far as I’m concerned. But this machine is as satisfying to use as any power tool in the garage — there is something about using the *right* tool for the job, and I’ve found no tasks that one might consider using a mixer for that the Kitchenaid doesn’t excel at. But it’s especially good for baking, and once you start using it, you’ll have your oven running a lot more than you used to.

The big difference between this mixer and the standard “two beater” models you may be familiar with is that it uses a single mixing attachment that rotates in two motions- it not only spins on its own axis, it also is rotated around the edge of the bowl. This does an extremely effective job of mixing ingredients without need for the bowl rotating, since the mixing motion covers the entire bowl. For most mixing jobs, it also requires no scraping of the sides with the spatula. IE: when it’s mixing, you can ignore it and work on other stuff.

The first attachment I’ll mention is the dough hook, which is a godsend for kneading. In the last day, I’ve made pizza dough, bagels, and whole wheat bread. Although this is the least powerful machine Kitchenaid makes, it kneads stiff dough (like the aforementioned bagels made with high-gluten flour) that would turn your mother’s mixmaster into a smoking, stinking heap of fried motor components. Machine kneading takes a *lot* of the effort and variability out of making bread… you never “knead in” too much flour to keep it from sticking to your hands, and the 20 minutes you normally spend working the dough turns into 10 minutes you can use to clean up the kitchen.

The other two attachments are the paddle and the whisk. The paddle is the all-purpose “workhorse” beater, and works extremely well for creaming sugar and butter together, mixing cookie dough or cake batter, or any other general-purpose mixing job. With the orbital motion, it comes right up to the edge of the bowl, so it is effectively scraping as it goes. The whisk is great for egg whites and making whipped cream. I’m sure it’s good for something else, but that’s what I’ve used it for.

As for capacity, the 4.5 quart model is suitable for pretty much any “normal” home recipes. It’s a “standard mixer”. It will easily knead enough dough at once for two loaves of bread, or mix a double-batch of cookies.

As for downsides: this thing is HEAVY. You won’t be moving it once it’s in place. If you knead very stiff dough, the bowl sometimes will get tightened to the extent that it is very difficult to remove from the base. It’s OK if you remember to leave it a little loose beforehand, but I always forget and I end up wrestling with the machine to twist it out. The metal trim band on the mixer right above the bowl has come a little loose on my model- the machine got a bit hot after some heavy kneading, and I think some adhesive got soft. It’s held in place well by something else, but sometimes it will slip when I’m wiping the machine off. It’s purely cosmetic from what I can tell, and it’s the only thing that feels cheap in any way about this machine. Other than that, I honestly haven’t had a single complaint.

In summary: this is an expensive mixer, but it is very well worth it. Even novice cooks will find it’s use enjoyable, and it will inspire you to explore new things that you probably didn’t do before because of the time and effort involved.

NOT FOR MAKING BREAD ON A REGULAR BASIS!!!!2
A word of warning – the Kitchenaides made in the past 10 or so years have a less powerful and durable motor than the older ones. If you like making homemade bread (like I do) purchase a professional mixer to knead your dough (or do it by hand like I do now). Kitchenaides used on a regular basis to make homemade bread (especially using whole wheat flour) will destroy your motor. When you send the mixer in for repairs (under warranty) they will say you’ve been using it commercially and refuse to stand behind their warranty. If you tell them you use it to make bread they’ll tell you it’s not made for that (they can’t explain why they provide a dough hook though or neglect to provide any warnings against breadmaking in particular). I’ve always loved Kitchenaide appliances, my sisters is 15+ years old and going strong but my poor 4 year old mixer overheats and strains doing the same recipes. My next mixer will be a Magic Mill DLX Kitchen Machine, its twice as much, but will last like the old Kitchenaides do. I have to give 2 stars for the lousy warranty service and lack of honesty in their manuals.

Update: August 2004
Haven’t been using my KA for bread since (bought a breadmachine to mix my dough). Only using the KA for light use abut 4 times a month. Now it makes a grinding noise continuously while in use. Cookie doughs seems almost too hard for it too. My sisters is now over 20 years old and going strong (even with bread). I wish they made them like they used too……..

I’m in love and his name is KitchenAid!5
I received a white one for an early christmas gift and just used it for the first time on he christmas cookies that are a tradition in my family. In the past years, I’ve used my mother’s old stand-mixer, and I’ve also used a hand mixer, which is near impossible to do with this recipe. This year, I used my new mixer and I am blown away! These cookies, that usually take forever, were done in no time! And even though I didn’t think the 4 1/2 quart bowl would be big enough for the whole recipe, I had no problem and room to spare! It’s surprisingly deep. It also stayed relatively cool through the three batches of cookies I made (I’m used to beginning to smell smoke from my mothers!)

I only used the flat beater yesterday, but have some bread recpies that I’m dying to use the dough hook on.

Just a few concerns…The dough sticks to the side of the bowl, so I did have to stop from time to time and scrape it off, but that was nothing that I wasn’t used to. And you cannot attach a larger bowl to this mixer…the only other bowl you can attach is one of the same size with a handle.

And definately invest in a splash guard. You only get lemon extract in your eyes once to make that decision.

Amazon.com Review
KitchenAid’s stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 250 watts of mixing power make child’s play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 4-1/2-quart bowl can hold up to 8 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats.

This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. The bowl itself locks tight to the base.

Standing 14 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman’s bowling ball, this stand mixer isn’t the sort of appliance you’ll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged–you’ll want to show it off.

To complete the package, KitchenAid includes a spiral-bound guide with instructions, mixing tips, and 67 recipes, from crispy waffles to a caramel walnut banana torte. –Betsy Danheim
